Learning about Persistence

After my daughter, Annie, was violently attacked, she, Renee, and I started a company called The Defense Shop (www.thedefenseshop.com) to supply self-defense products to people needing personal protection. At fairs, we would encounter women who had been attacked. Besides equipping these victims with products like stun guns and pepper spray to ward off potential attackers, in some cases we were able to pray with them. The more joy we gave to others, the more joy we received. The pain from Annie’s attack was being turned for good.

To further our purpose, Annie, Renee and I decided to open a Defense Shop kiosk at a mall in Escondido, California. Sales were far less than we expected. This venture seemed like a loss. We questioned whether or not we had misinterpreted God’s direction by pursuing this endeavor.

Then one day an inconspicuous man with crooked glasses stopped by our booth to inquire about our products. He left a business card, and we thought little of this encounter until a friend at church encouraged us to follow up with the man. We discovered this man was known as “The Entrepreneur’s Best Friend.” At our meeting, Renee mentioned one of her inventions, a portable pop-up pet door (www.popuppetdoor.com) that she and her sister created for our sixteen-year-old dog, Scout, so he could go outside without our needing to leave the door open. Renee created this product to solve a perplexing problem, but God used it to form a purpose far beyond a simple fix.

We formed a partnership with investors. Then we auditioned for the hit television show Shark Tank, and the producers selected our product to move forward. Since then, Renee has appeared on television shows and traveled around the country, promoting this multimillion-dollar product. Along the way, Renee shares her love of God by ministering to those in need.

That auspicious introduction at a little kiosk led to a supernatural success through Christ. God turned our intention into His perfection. That is the way God seems to operate. He weaves a tale of purpose through the small twists and turns of our journeys. He uses failure to help us learn, grow and connect the dots to some larger picture. We just need to take that first step and then the next and then the next one after that. And when we fall down, we need to simply get up and try again. God works in the minutia to produce the macro of our life. Our job is to follow His way and trust His providence.

The macro of my life changed dramatically six years ago when I was laid off from a medical device company, along with most of my leadership team. Now I look back on my former life and wonder why I did not lay myself off years earlier. This layoff launched my career as a full-time trainer of people. God has a way of causing major disruptions in our lives as a wake-up call to force us into heeding a higher calling.
